I want to be the professor that so many others were to me when I was a student. For me the goal of teaching is to be there with students as they create, learn, and grow. Teaching can make life- changing impacts on the lives of students and I want to be the person to enact that type of change through my knowledge and expertise. Through teaching and enriching the practice of others, I hope to also ignite within myself prolific changes, whether in my art practice, my research, or my life. I believe in life-long learning.
The courses that I am prepared to teach range from foundations to critical thinking courses. I am particularly interested in teaching printmaking courses rooted in mono-type and pressure printing, along with courses on collage and digital media. In my teaching, I plan to focus heavily on conceptual and critical thinking in relation to the art the students make, in tandem with the work created by their peers and professional artists. Understanding how to talk about one’s own work and the work of others is extremely important. My objectives when teaching address personal growth as well as hard work. People come from all different walks of life with different skill levels and experiences. I expect my students to improve their skills and increase their knowledge based on their own level, not a generalized one where there is one set standard. When students leave my class they can expect to have a body of work they are proud of and to be able to communicate and intelligently talk about it.
In order to reach these objectives, I intend to teach through a wide variety of methods, including lecture, group critique, hands on workshop, and individual meetings with the students. As I stated before, I believe a critical idea in teaching is that not all students learn the same, therefore my methods of teaching will vary based on what I feel the students are responding to the most. I gage the effectiveness of my courses based on the students’ voices and what works for them. Teaching is a journey that one takes with other individuals and if something is not working then you change and figure out what does work. The growth and knowledge gained by the students will be shown in the work they produce and the way in which they communicate to me and others about it.
My teaching experience includes teaching Painting Basics as a Continuing Education instructor at the Cleveland Institute of Art, Figure Drawing workshops at the Museum of Contemporary Art Cleveland, along with proctoring various courses while working towards my graduate degree. I believe the time that I have spent in school and the experiences I have gained through mentors and being part of an art community have prepared for the challenges of teaching. I’ve experienced how professors have approached problems, worked with students, and engaged with students’ work. Teaching requires adjusting to students needs so that they are being challenged enough. I am to be their support system when needed. Teaching is about doing everything in your power to make sure students reach their full potential and are the best versions of themselves that they can be.
